On Tuesday, May 3rd Coral Canyon hosted the Rise Project Introduction Workshop where youth had the opportunity to meet artist Damian Jim and learn about trash art, as well as the ways traditional Native stories have been used as inspiration for various forms of art.
The youth were broken into four groups, where they were able to choose a Dine` theme/story to center their art project around. The groups chose The Tree of Life, Colors, Worlds and Stars.
Together, they read through the stories and began brainstorming how they would translate the information using the various art/craft supplies and recycled materials that were available to them. 11 youth have participated in this unique project, so far.
A few days later, on Saturday, May 7th, Coral Canyon hosted once again the Rise Workshop I Participating youth worked on their art projects, bringing the ideas they brainstormed during the Introduction to life. The teams were very creative in their use of color and texture and enjoyed using the recycled materials to make beauty out of "trash".
Artist Damian Jim provided advice to the youth on how to approach their designs and assisted with creative direction, as needed. Participants also enjoyed a bbq lunch of hotdogs and chips. The youth have since then completed their art during Workshop II, which was scheduled on Saturday, May 21st.
